Ready for ski season?

The leaves have started to fall, and as our seasonal displays of gravity go, next in line is snow. For some folks, that’s cause for recoil. For others, celebration. The latter crowd will have a place to celebrate on Wednesday night in Portland, where Ski Maine is holding it’s Ski Season Launch Party.

The event, running from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Eastland Park Hotel, will place a heavy emphasis on nostalgia. Films and exhibits highlight the early days of skiing, with artifacts from the early 1900s highlighting, in particular, the role the city of Portland played in the development of the ski industry in Maine.

For the first hour, there will be book signings and sales with some well-known authors who have documented the history of the sport or the Maine mountains it takes place on: John Christie, Glenn Parkinson and Dave Irons will be putting down their John Hancocks for ski readers Wednesday.

There’s a $20 admission at the door. Go to SkiMaine.com for more information.
