Portland PD graduates its third class of junior cops

On Sunday, the public is invited to attend a ceremony in which acting Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck awards honorary badges to the graduates of the department’s third annual Portland Police Explorer Academy. If supporting the aspiring young adults of the community isn’t reason enough to turn out, it’s worth noting there’s a pizza party for the newly emblazoned junior cops as well.

The program is done with the sponsorship of the Boy Scouts of America, and is geared for interested young adults between the ages of 14 and 20. The Explorers attend regular meetings, go on ride-alongs (which, as a journalist, I can testify are interesting and fun), and receive what an event announcement calls “situational training,” among other police-related activities.

The ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Portland Police Department, 109 Middle St.
