Round-by-round breakdown of Portland mayoral race runoffs

The public, candidates and members of the media crowded around a screen here in the State of Maine Room at City Hall, where elections officials and consultants projected round-by-round instant runoffs.

We could all see on a bar graph who benefited when a lower ranked candidate was eliminated, and his or her second choice votes were reallocated as first choice votes for other candidates.

For those who have been following my blog posts all day, you likely know what transpired here throughout Day 2 of the mayoral race vote count. It included hours of setting up equipment, hours of scanning ballots into the machines, more hours of waiting for the machines to process images of those ballots, still more hours of waiting for elections officials to review enough of those scans to verify that the vote counting software was accurate, and then the instant runoffs just after 8 p.m.

It was a good 12- or 13-hour day for all of the elections officials and consultants, and many reporters as well.

Unofficial winner Michael Brennan claimed victory after 13 of the other 14 candidates were eliminated from contention. He came into the day with the most first choice votes, as counted on Election Day, and he only grew that lead when the second choices were redistributed.

Here’s the round-by-round breakdown:
