Help the hungry, stuff the truck at the Maine Mall today

Starting in an hour, folks from the Good Shepherd Food-Bank will be in the Maine Mall parking lot, at the corner of Gorham Road and Philbrook Avenue, with a truck available to stuff with food items for the hungry this holiday season.

They’ll be set up from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and are urging folks to stop by with donations of canned items such as vegetables, fruit, tuna, chicken and soups. Monetary donations are also appreciated, and Good Shepherd says for every $1 donation it receives, it can deploy $8 of food.

Here’s what Good Shepherd says about the need to help the hungry this year:

The Food-Bank’s partner agencies are reporting significant increases in need this year. The poor economy continues to pose significant challenges to Maine families; unemployment remains stagnant and even those with jobs often have trouble stretching their budget to cover all costs. The Food Bank is asking the community to play a role in fighting hunger this winter by bringing nonperishable donations to help Stuff the Truck on November 19.
