Boston sports legends Cowens, Bourque and Tiant to hit the links in southern Maine

When it’s the former President of the United States of America making the invitations, you’re going to have folks like this showing up to the party. For the 10th installment of the George H.W. Bush Celebrity Golf Classic, held at the Cape Arundel Golf Club in the Bush family’s summer-hometown of Kennebunkport, the list of participants is scheduled to include Dave Cowens, Ray Bourque and Luis Tiant.

Luis Tiant as seen at the Bath Country Club in this file photo from Troy R. Bennett of The Times Record.

Cowens, a Boston Celtics legend, has two NBA championships and a league MVP trophy, and has been inducted into the pro basketball Hall of Fame.

Bourque, a Boston Bruins legend, won a Stanley Cup and five Norris Trophies (awarded to each season’s top defensive player), and has been inducted into the pro hockey Hall of Fame.

Tiant, a Boston Red Sox legend, was a three-time All Star and has been inducted into the Red Sox’ and Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum’s halls of fame.

As in past years, the Bush Celebrity Golf Classic aims to raise money for Gary’s House, a Mercy Health System facility providing families of patients an affordable place to stay nearby. According to an event announcement, the golf tournament “has historically raised more than $150,000 for the charity.”

The best ball scramble tournament — for which registration is now open, by the way — takes place on June 13 and culminates in a Point Of Light Award gala at the nearby Colony Hotel.

The number of teams is capped at 27, and registration closes on May 15 — if the slots haven’t all sold out by then. Past golfers to join in have included George H.W. Bush himself, fellow former President Bill Clinton and three-time (hopefully soon-to-be fourth time) Super Bowl champion quarterback Tom Brady.
