Gelato Fiasco now open in Portland after delay in getting custom cases from Italy (video)

Back in October, I posted a letter on this blog by the co-founder of the Brunswick-based Gelato Fiasco announcing plans to open a Portland location.

Well, in case you missed it, that Fore Street spot is now indeed open. But according to the Gelato Fiasco brass, the road to the opening wasn’t as smooth as their signature product.

Here’s what co-founder Joshua Davis had to say in a store announcement:

Our store was supposed to open several weeks ago, but as you might expect, getting gelato cases custom-built in Italy is unpredictable. We had to wait for them to be built, put on a plane, imported through U.S. Customs, and re-built here. But the result was worth it: a stunning stage for our flavors and servers.

Like in their Brunswick location, The Gelato Fiasco is discounting their dish prices by 1 percent for each degree it is below freezing these days, so don’t let the winter temperatures damage your appetite for the frozen treats.

Here’s another statement by Davis on the new 425 Fore St. spot:

We are very happy to have moved to the big city and to be part of the dessert renaissance in the Old Port. It is our hope that The Gelato Fiasco Portland will be a place for the community to gather in a comfortable, cozy setting and explore the artistry of our gelato and espresso drinks.

If you want a glimpse of one particular day’s selection of flavors (they rotate through 30 hand-made daily flavors from a master list of more than 1,000), see how gelato is made and hear Davis wax poetic about the product, watch here:
