Forums, survey slated for Portland superintendent search input

Portland Superintendent Search Committee Chairwoman Sarah Thompson

The committee and consulting firm, PROACT, driving the search for the next superintendent of the Portland Public Schools has scheduled a series of forums intended to get a sense of what qualities community members want in the district’s next top administrator.

Current Superintendent James Morse is retiring from the post in June.

Here’s a list of the times and places for members of the public to weigh in, as snipped from a district announcement:

  • Tuesday, February 14 at 4 p.m. in the library of Ocean Avenue Elementary School, 150 Ocean Avenue.
  • Wednesday, February 15 at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium of Lyman Moore Middle School, 171 Auburn Street.
  • Thursday, February 16 at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria of Riverton Elementary School, 1600 Forest Avenue.

Each forum will last an hour and a half.  The forums will focus on three questions:

  • What are the district’s greatest strengths?
  • What are the most prominent issues or concerns that the district must face?
  • What are the most desirable characteristics in a new superintendent?

If you can’t make it to one of those three forums, the school system is also planning to post a survey on its website, according to the district announcement.
