MDOT lauds southern Maine’s first handicapped accessible cab service

Maine Department of Transportation officials plan to be on hand Saturday morning in Saco for the unveiling of A-1 Cab Service’s new handicapped accessible minivan, a vehicle the department described as “groundbreaking” in an announcement today.

The MDOT announcement stated that the service’s new minivan represents the first handicapped accessible taxi in the region, which, if that’s true, seems long overdue.

The vehicle, which features side-ramp entry for wheelchairs, was purchased using Federal Transit Administration funds piped through the DOT’s Accessible Taxi Grant Program, with matching funds put up by A-1 Cab Service.

Stated MDOT Commissioner David Bernhardt:

MaineDOT applauds the willingness of A-1 Cab Service to enter into a public-private partnership with the state to assist it in removing barriers to transportation services. John and Debra Surran and their entire staff have set a standard in how small businesses can partner with a state agency to do the right thing for their communities they serve.

The Saturday morning ceremony kicks off at 10 a.m. at the Southern Maine Motors showroom, at 824 Portland Road in Saco.
