According to a news release from event host University of Southern Maine, the Science Bowl is a quiz show-style competition not unlike “Jeopardy,” in which competitors can be grilled on a range of topics that includes biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth sciences and mathematics.

Portland-based Waynflete School came in second, and the participants from the Contoocook Valley Regional High School of Peterborough, N.H., claimed the Larry Gray Award for Team Civility.

Nationwide, these Science Bowls are a U.S. Department of Energy program, and the National Science Bowl (April 26-30) will be hosted by department officials in D.C. That’s where the Capers will be headed.

Locally, the event was sponsored by USM, Texas Instruments Corporation and IDEXX, with USM faculty members Rob Sanford and Bob Kuech coordinating the event and its 55 volunteers.
