Gas main work in Westbrook to affect on-street parking

NEUCO (New England Utility Constructors) is beginning night work tonight replacing the gas main under Brown Street in Westbrook, a project that’ll continue on overnight tomorrow as well.

Next week, the gas main replacement work will move up Brown Street to Cottage Place, then continue along Cottage Place. Here’s how the project will affect Westbrook residents or commuters who pass through the area, according to NEUCO:

On-street parking will be affected by the  construction, but two-way traffic will be maintained and residents and businesses will have access to their property and driveway at all times. This work is being done in conjunction with the bridge replacement on Cumberland Street.

NEUCO is working as a contractor for natural gas provider Unitil, and the gas main replacements are part of Unitil’s SURE Project, in which the company plans to upgrade nearly 100 miles of pipe in Westbrook and Portland. That includes 70 miles of older cast iron and steel piping that will be switched out in favor of newer state-of-the-art plastic, according to the SURE Project website.
