One of three Portland superintendent finalists to meet the public

On Tuesday night, one of the three finalists to become Portland’s next superintendent of schools will participate in a question-and-answer period with members of the public.

From 7:55 p.m. to 8:55 p.m. at Casco Bay High School, Portlanders will be introduced for the first time to an individual who may be in charge of the state’s largest school district as of July 1.

Of course, there are two other finalists in the running as well, but they have chosen not to participate in public forums at this juncture “for confidentiality reasons,” according to a district announcement. This is likely because those candidates could put themselves in hot water with their current employers if it became widely known that they’re seeking jobs elsewhere. Not stepping into the limelight at this stage of the game is not an unreasonable precaution for those two hopefuls.

If the process in searching for a replacement for outgoing Superintendent James Morse is to follow its intended schedule, the final decision on the hire will be made in less than a month. All of the three finalists still must go through interviews with the School Board, top administrators and a group of community members.
