Portland schools hire former Navy, Apple tech as new computer guru

The Portland Public Schools announced today the hiring of a new technology director on the heels of the passage of a fiscal year 2013 budget carrying a $2 million technology investment plan in the coming years.

The new tech guy for the state’s largest school district is Thomas “Trey” Bachner, who most recently worked as a senior project engineer for Apple, Inc., supporting the Maine Learning Technology Initiative.

According to the district, Bachner previously served as technology director for the Falmouth schools and (not simultaneously) as a technology trainer at U.S. Naval Air Stations in Brunswick, Virginia and Iceland.

Here’s a comment on the hire by former School Board chairman and current district Chief Operations Officer Peter Eglinton:

Trey comes at an important time for Portland Public Schools, as we seek to invest in critical technology needs to support student learning and district operations. We look forward to his vision and leadership as we work together to build a stronger school system.
