Bangor Savings Bank this week donated $10,000 to the Portland Public Schools to replace items lost by teachers and students in a Monday fire that has closed the Fred P. Hall School for a whole week.

According to the district, the bank showed up with the big check — big in numbers, not in physical size — when Hall School teachers and staff were working in a space at Deering High School temporarily to make plans for the school’s reopening next Monday.

“Teachers gasped as the amount of the donation was announced, and several wiped away tears,” the district announcement proclaimed.

Here’s the statement from bank senior vice president Jim MacLeod:

We were shocked and saddened to learn of the fire at Hall Elementary School that damaged classrooms and displaced teachers and students. On behalf of all of the employees of Bangor Savings Bank, I am honored to present this check and hope it will help the teachers and students at Hall School recover from this loss.
