Portland school the focus of national PBS NewsHour broadcast segment

Portland Public Schools announced this afternoon that King Middle School will be the focus of an upcoming segment of PBS’ nightly 7 p.m. news broadcast NewsHour.

On Tuesday’s edition, the NewsHour crew will show a piece about the school’s learning expedition on energy. Here’s more on the subject from a district announcement:

A NewsHour crew began taping at King in the early fall. The segment airing this week is the first of two parts describing an eighth grade learning expedition titled “reVOLT.”  The second part will be broadcast at a date to be announced.

Students in King’s Windsor House learned about energy, energy transformations and the design and engineering processes during the “reVOLT” expedition. The students studied alternative forms of energy and their application in Maine and throughout the world.

Students designed devices that solve modern-day energy needs in unique ways by harnessing natural energy. Examples include solar-powered water purifiers, rechargeable house lighting and wind-powered cell phone chargers. The students will present their final products at a culminating event at King on Feb. 7.
