Portland police say Friday night death is ‘apparent homicide’

Just after 9 p.m. tonight (Friday), Portland police responded to an apartment at 214 Brighton Ave. and found one man dead.

Assistant Police Chief Vernon Malloch said in an announcement about 90 minutes later that investigators are considering the incident an “apparent homicide” and that “the perpetrator is not believed to be in the area.”

Gregg Lagerquist, an anchor with our media partners at WGME, CBS 13, posted on Twitter that police closed part of Brighton Avenue and were looking for a black Chevy Impala, and that the suspect in the incident was still at large.

Multiple media outlets have called the incident a shooting.

“We were hanging out upstairs and saw blue lights,” neighbor Joe Schneiderat told WMTW reporter Courtney Sturgeon. “We kind of hung out the window to see what was going on, we saw two cops go inside with guns drawn and crime street unit showed up not long after that.”

Police have yet to identify the victim or release a description of the suspect. They’re asking anyone who might have information about the situation to call police at 874-8575 or text anonymously to 274637 with the keyword “Gotcha.”
