A Portland newsletter served hot and fresh

Some of you out there may have noticed that for almost two weeks now, I’ve been putting out a daily e-newsletter. I’d really started to appreciate news delivery services like Circa and the New York Times’ NYT Now, which condense the top stories from around the world into easy-to-digest rundowns, delivered to your inbox or mobile device at a time that’s convenient for you.

I wanted to create something similar for my southern Maine readers. Our (relatively) new Greater Portland Lunch Rush newsletter doesn’t have a standalone app like those services I mentioned above, but after a week or so of tweaks and feedback from early subscribers, I think I’ve got a nice product that most Portland area news consumers will enjoy receiving every day.

I also thought about the best possible timing for a daily newsletter, and realized that I see many of you out in the Old Port around lunch time, like me, catching up on loose ends while waiting at the Public Market for my burrito to arrive, my sandwich to come across the counter at the West End Deli or my slices of Otto pizza to come out of the oven.

What if I timed a comprehensive, but digestible, e-newsletter to arrive in peoples’ inboxes during that break time between busy work mornings and busy work afternoons, I thought.

Hence, newsletter’s name — Lunch Rush — and its little slogan: “A healthy serving of news in the time you have.”

Every weekday between 11 a.m. and noon (give or take), I put out a roundup of the top few Greater Portland news, arts and sports stories, as well as a piece of locally relevant commentary.

I introduce most letters with some links to a few of the major news stories across the larger state of Maine, and end them most days with the Internet’s top trending stories with ties to Portland.

I’ll give you an idea where to find food deals in the city and where to find live music.

Obviously, it’s a BDN-branded product, but I don’t box myself in with just BDN content. If I’m going to honestly tell you I’m giving you the top Portland area news every day, so you can truly stay informed with a one-stop newsletter, I’m going to include headlines from all Portland media outlets, including the Portland Press Herald and our media partners at The Forecaster and CBS 13, among many other sources.

Click here to see the latest newsletter and scroll through a few days’ worth of editions. See if you like it. If so, please subscribe — there’s a link on page above, or you can click here to go directly to the sign-up page.
